Christian Health has been a long-standing provider of quality and compassionate
adult day services from our Wayne and Wyckoff campuses. In March of 2020
the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) mandated that these types
of programs be closed due to the pandemic. Since that time, we have committed
ourselves to support our adult day service clients and their caregivers
through phone calls, virtual support groups, driveway visits, activity
mailings, and wellness checks.
Recently, NJDOH issued detailed guidelines on how providers could choose
to re-open their medical adult day service programs in a safe and clinically
appropriate manner. Unfortunately, neither NJDOH nor the New Jersey Department
of Human Services (DHS) have made provision to adequately increase reimbursement
for Medicaid and other state programs that provide critical funding for
medical adult day services. These programs have, historically, been significantly
under-funded by NJ which left programs, such as ours, unable to cover
the basic costs incurred in providing quality, safe care. In a post-COVID
environment, demands associated with providing quality and safe care have
significantly increased and in turn, so have the associated costs.
As a result, Christian Health is unable to reopen our in-person medical/social adult day service programs at our Wayne and Wyckoff locations at this time or in the foreseeable future. We will continue to offer our support, guidance, resources and referral options for the care needs of the community. Please feel free to contact us at (201) 848-5856 to discuss alternate options that may be available within Christian Health or the community.
We are deeply saddened by this very difficult decision which was discussed and considered carefully by Christian Health trustees and our management team. Over the years, we have been humbled by the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with so many clients and their families in caregiving for our community. Moreover, we have been blessed by the contributions of a dedicated adult day staff at Christian Health, who have all been notified and presented with diverse opportunities to continue their service with us; many of whom have already been deployed with new responsibilities. We will continue to advocate for adult day services, and hope that the future might bring a better opportunity.
